Only in Honduras

So as I have been here in Honduras for over two weeks now I have noticed that there are some things that happen here that would just never happen back at home... like...

1. drinking pop out of a bag

2. paying money to go to a public bathroom

3. having your school flooded by a severe thunderstorm

4. being unexpectedly DRENCHED from a random rainstorm on a casual walk in the neighbourhood

5. having a taxi squeeze into very tiny spaces in order to avoid traffic and accidents

6. listening to our neighbours sing Kareoke at the top of their lungs until 3 in the morning

7. finding a gecko in your house

8. hosting a birthday party for a student including a meal, cake, and huge goodybag for everyone

9. hiding money in unusual places when going out in public

10. getting stared at by everyone

My First Day Teaching

I woke up on my first day nervous and excited about my first day of teaching! On Monday morning I just stood at the front of the classroom and thought to myself.. wow, this is actually my classroom, my students, and I am the sole teacher in the room!  It was an awesome feeling. Its so great to finally do things the way I want to and to develop relationships with my students right from the beginning of the school year.

My students are very cute and very sweet! Apparently that doesn't always last too long, but I'll take it as long as I have it! They have too much trouble saying my whole name, Miss. Van Arragon, so I allow them to just call me Miss V. which I prefer anyway. Most of the time they just call me "Meese" (spanish way of saying "Miss") anyway!

My first week went fairly well all considering. Because the week prior was mostly setting up my classroom and orientation, I had little chance to plan good lessons. Thankfully I have been blessed with three returning teachers in my Grade 2 teaching team and they have been a wonderful support to me! I am so thankful for them!

I am so excited for the year ahead and to see what God has in store for me and the students I teach. Please pray that  the Lord will give me strength and wisdom as there are sure to be many challenges along the way.

My First Week

I created this blog site a couple weeks ago but still haven't got around to making a post so I thought it was about time! Here's a quick recap of my first week.

I started off frustrated in Buffalo airport as I apparently packed over 50lb too much! I would have been charged $450 so I had to go through my suitcases and take out 50lb worth of stuff! Not exactly what I had in mind at 4am the morning of my departure!

I arrived in Atlanta for my layover before flying out to Tegucigalpa. I was starting to feel a little nervous and unsure of leaving home until I met three other teachers in the airport! We all happened to be sitting by each other and figured out we were all teaching at IST! That definitely eased my nerves and I was suddenly more comfortable with everything.

We arrived in Tegucigalpa and met another 20 or so teachers at the airport. We all threw our suitcases into a schoolbus and were dropped off to our new houses! I love my house and my new roomates Kaitlyn and Nichole. I will post pics of our house soon!

The next few days of our first week was orientation of the school, a 3 hour shopping trip to get groceries and household items, and exploring the city.

On Monday I finally got the keys to my classroom! It was such an awesome feeling to just stand there and look at my classroom and being so grateful to God for fulfilling this dream that I have had for as long as I can remember. The rest of this week included setting up my classroom and attending various school orientation meetings.
